The Rise of Skywalker (2019) D23 Special Look 1080p DTS-HD MA and AC3 5.1 8

The Rise of Skywalker (2019)

The Rise of Skywalker (2019)

Just got the D23 Expo ‘Special Look’ footage for ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ (2019) uploaded. Some have asked for 4K, but 1080p is the highest quality I have access to. I really like this as it does a nice job of tying the old and new together. The part that most people will be concerned with is the photo above. It is probably a vision of the future, like when Luke chopped off Vader’s head in the cave in The Empire Strikes Back (1980). However, perhaps she isn’t evil but just really likes the look of a red light sabre. Who knows? I guess we will have to wait and see. And we don’t have long to wait now, it is less than 4 months until release date.

You can get the D23 Special Look (which really is a trailer) at the link below, and if you want to check out the first trailer (and trailers from other Star Wars films), go here: Star Wars Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker (2019)

THX 2019 4K Trailer DTS:Neural Upmix encoded in DTS-HD MA 5.1 and AC3 5.1 5

THX 2019

THX 2019

I wasn’t expecting this, but THX has dropped a new trailer to celebrate their 35th anniversary. However, I am confused as the first film to undergo any THX quality control was Return of the Jedi, and that was 36 years ago (1983). Perhaps that was an experiment and a year later it was officially launched. If anyone knows for sure, please chime in. Do you know what the acronym THX means? It stands for Tomlinson Holman Experiment, after the sound engineer of the same name who developed the THX sound system. Tomlinson Holman also developed the first 10.2 sound system.

The new THX trailer does not have a name yet, but because it is 2019, there is a Twitter Poll for the fans to select the name. I see Trailer McTrailerface was offered as a suggestion. Also, because it is 2019 the trailer dropped on YouTube and offers what THX calls “THX Spatial Audio” which provides a “deeper immersive audio experience with headphones or earbuds”. I am not sure how that works since watching and hearing the trailer via YouTube provides only a stereo experience. But that doesn’t seem to matter these days judging by the endless array of comments praising the sound of Dolby Atmos trailers on YouTube.

If you want a better experience than offered by YouTube I did some work on the YouTube encode. I did some processing on the video to remove the banding artifacts. And I did a DTS:Neural Upmix on the THX Spatial Audio (Stereo) track which turned out to be really immersive. Compared to the experience of watching on YouTube, one could be forgiven for believing it was a true 5.1 mix. I am hoping that in time this will arrive properly on blu-ray, but until then this is the best out there. You can find the THX 2019 trailer at the THX Trailers page.

The Dolby Trailers page has been updated to include a number of Dolby Vision trailers. All files have two video tracks, one with UHD 2160p and one with HD 1080p. Both video tracks are encoded in H265 HEVC Level 5.1. 10 bit Rec 2020 color space, mastered with max luminance of 4,000 cd/m2. On the audio side, there are three options. Dolby TrueHD 7.1 with Atmos, Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 with Atmos (EAC3) and Dolby Digital 5.1.

The files added are Core Universe, Escape, Pufferfish, Chameleon, and Leviathan. They can be found on the Dolby Trailers page.

Joker (2019) Trailer 1 1080p AC3 5.1 upmix

Joker (2019)

A number of people have been asking for the trailer for Joker (2019) and until recently there was a user uploaded trailer, which is no longer available. Since Joker is a Warner Bros. production, I do not have access to masters, like other studios. I have placed another request for access to Warner, which is pending. I don’t expect the result to be any different than before. With that in mind, this is the best I can do. The source is Apple’s encode of the official trailer. The video has not been changed. The audio on the Apple encode was AAC 128 kbps, which is not super, so I opted to only do an AC3 encode of a 5.1 mix I created using the DTS:Neural upmixer. This is the best I can do for Warner Bros. films.

Joker (2019) tells the origin story of the DC villain the Joker, aka Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix). Don’t expect a happy ending. Trailer 1 can be found at the link below.
