THX 2019 4K Trailer DTS:Neural Upmix encoded in DTS-HD MA 5.1 and AC3 5.1 5

THX 2019

I wasn’t expecting this, but THX has dropped a new trailer to celebrate their 35th anniversary. However, I am confused as the first film to undergo any THX quality control was Return of the Jedi, and that was 36 years ago (1983). Perhaps that was an experiment and a year later it was officially launched. If anyone knows for sure, please chime in. Do you know what the acronym THX means? It stands for Tomlinson Holman Experiment, after the sound engineer of the same name who developed the THX sound system. Tomlinson Holman also developed the first 10.2 sound system.

The new THX trailer does not have a name yet, but because it is 2019, there is a Twitter Poll for the fans to select the name. I see Trailer McTrailerface was offered as a suggestion. Also, because it is 2019 the trailer dropped on YouTube and offers what THX calls “THX Spatial Audio” which provides a “deeper immersive audio experience with headphones or earbuds”. I am not sure how that works since watching and hearing the trailer via YouTube provides only a stereo experience. But that doesn’t seem to matter these days judging by the endless array of comments praising the sound of Dolby Atmos trailers on YouTube.

If you want a better experience than offered by YouTube I did some work on the YouTube encode. I did some processing on the video to remove the banding artifacts. And I did a DTS:Neural Upmix on the THX Spatial Audio (Stereo) track which turned out to be really immersive. Compared to the experience of watching on YouTube, one could be forgiven for believing it was a true 5.1 mix. I am hoping that in time this will arrive properly on blu-ray, but until then this is the best out there. You can find the THX 2019 trailer at the THX Trailers page.
