I obtained an official foreign language 4K version of Wonder Woman 1984. Since it is a foreign language version, I had to switch the text elements for up-scaled English versions. The end result is 4096×1716, which is the theatrical DCI compliant image size. As I mentioned in my reply to a comment on the original WW84 post, this took many hours to decode, edit, encode, proof, fix, encode, proof, upload, etc. But I do it not for the few dollars received from advertising but because I want people who care about having the best video and audio quality to have it.

If you have been a follower of this site for a while you will know that I have had mixed results with H.265 HEVC. On Black Friday I took advantage of the discount on Adobe Creative Cloud and now have the Adobe Media Encoder which allows for encoding in H.265. So, I have encoded the 4K Wonder Woman 1984 trailer using the HEVC codec supplied with Adobe Media Encoder. I am able to play it back and it doesn’t freeze my system, so I take that as a good sign, however I would appreciate feedback on the quality or performance of the H.265 encode. The links are below:

  2. HEVC tested on an M9702/Oppo UDP-203 Clone
    on a 1080P HDTV. PQ is great! Playback is great.
    Thanks. Now fix that most recent Star Wars 4K encode one. DCP unwrap to j2c image sequence? Should be easy after that.
    Broadcast wave pcm/Opt-Atom, unwrap to multi-channel wave then a little work, Dolby Suite, encode to
    DTS-HD MA 5.1 or just leave as 5.1 pcm? Unless DCP has drastically changed since I last touched it.

    1. Thanks! DCP hasn’t changed. I will take a look at the 4K Star Wars again now that I have more encoding options.

  3. The H265 version has severe banding, especially in the scene with the photo at 00:19. Even though the bitrate 25Mbps is sufficient (at least for streaming), higher quality encoder settings should be used.

    Why not provide lossless ProRes versions instead? The title says “Lossless Movie Trailers” 🙂

    1. Thanks Arni. I did not have a ProRes version of the 4K trailer – it was Jpeg2000 in an mxf container. I do not intend to provide ProRes as the file sizes would be around 3GB per trailer. Space is an issue as it is. Additionally, I am not allowed to provide the masters as part of usage agreements. I will keep working on better encodes though.

      1. By the way, is the source 8-bit or 12-bit? If it’s 12-bit, it looks like the banding issue comes from downconverting to 8-bit without using dithering.

        To be honest, I don’t care if I download 1GB or 3GB. If I want to watch crap quality, I’ll go to YouTube 🙂

        1. Hi Arni. The source was 12-bit. Anything I tried to reduce the banding resulted in other issues being introduced.

          1. Have you considered making 12-bit encodes? Although not all video cards and playback devices have 12-bit hardware decoding, this would be truly a theater experience.

            Instead of making medium and low quality versions (32Mbps and 16Mbps), why not make high and medium quality versions (12-bit HEVC and 8-bit H264). For those who want low quality – it’s available on Youtube 🙂

          2. Yes, this is something I am considering. I have a few challenges working with 12 bit, but it is something that I am working to resolve.
