  1. Somehow I expected 13 years of CGI advancements since the first film to blow me away with this trailer, but my gut reaction was that this looked on par with the first. I’m probably just remembering the first with a foggy and rose-tinted memory, and desensitized by recent visual marvels.

If you’re going to see this in theatres, especially if you’re going for 3D, I believe you’re going to want to seek out an IMAX GT Laser theatre specifically. 50% brighter compensates for the dimming effect of the glasses. 4k vs 2k resolution. Taller aspect ratio (Avatar has a 1.78:1 master, taller than digital IMAX but not as tall as the full GT Imax potential of 1.43:1.), and I believe less compressed chroma subsampling as is normally applied to 3d movies for bandwidth reasons. I also think seating really matters for 3d. If I can’t reserve a central seat, I’ll keep looking into future dates until I find some available.

For anyone interested, here’s a couple links to help you find your nearest “real” imax venue (they’re sadly quite sparse):

    https://www.reddit.com/r/imax/comments/ptpb6e/imax_gt_laser_theatres_list_in_the_world/

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_IMAX_venues (Specifically the ones labelled GT Laser)

    1. Hi Gordon

If the master is 1.78:1 does this mean the cinemascope version in “normal” theatres is cropped top and bottom?

      Thanks in advance

  2. The IMAX version seems to be dimmer (has a different gamma curve) than the non-IMAX versions. Is this an error or by design?

  3. Hello, first of all thank you!
I have a request, can you please encode this trailer in x265 10bit at crf 16/18 (chroma 4:2:0). Because yuv444/yuv422 shows lots of banding issues while playing. Maybe because my hardware doesn’t support it? While normal yuv420 x265 10bit plays nicely.

    1. You should try potplayer with madvr plugin as the video renderer, and input your display hardware specs to madvr settings. Or you could try 5kplayer, it might do the trick with zero need for configuration or setup.

      1. Since the admin has already done x265 10bit (chroma sub 4:2:0) encodes for some previous trailers I was wondering if he could do the same for this Avatar trailer. I downloaded that AVC 8bit one, maybe not as good as HEVC 10bit encodes still better than anything else on the internet 🙂

    2. Try kmp64x player it support every format I tried every player for pc this is the best simple and easy and no ads and every month update

  4. Do you know the reason why both ISO 3D don’t work on PS4? You can only hear the audio (the video is all black), and my 3D TV doesn’t recognize the disc as 3D (usually a warning appears “wear your 3D glasses now”). I’ve tried different resolution on PS4, but nothing changes. Other 3D disc movies works just fine.

    1. Hi. I don’t know. I will pass this on to the person who did the encoding. Sorry it isn’t working for you.

      1. It works!!! Thank you very much!!! 🙂
(side note: if every director would have done 3D as good as Cameron does it, I think it wouldn’t be already dead…)

  5. Man, THANK YOU. I was getting worried, wringing my hands and waiting. Well worth it. Having watched the trailer many times posted on the Avatar YOUTUBE channel, the difference is SO CLEAR!

  6. Thank you so much for the amazing 3D Trailers with 5.1 sound!

I hope there coming more 3D versions from the Trailers in the future – 3D rules!!!!!

Keep the good work, much appreciated

    Greetings

  7. Im sure you got a 3D 4K IMAX DCP. Surprised its not encrypted and requires a KDM key…?

I didn’t think 4K DCP IMAX did 3D, if my memory recalls, as it was a 1080p or something 2K two video tracks, but the IMAX projector I worked on was not a Laser projector, it was a dual/twin 2K IMAX Projector.. One eye for each Left and Right, and used a different 3D set of glasses than the Sony Real-D glasses.

Home Blu-ray spec doesn’t have 4K 3D, that’s why its only going to be playable unless transcoded down to 1080p (Frame packed). We both know who’s great at that!

  8. I want to make a 3D SBS video into a 180 degree VR video. But I don’t know how.
    Is it possible?

    1. I don’t know how either. But I would suspect that there would be some distortion as the frame isn’t that wide. But I might be wrong.

  9. Hey just want to say thank you so much for this site and the work you put in, especially to get the 3D trailers. At this point I have rewatched the Avatar 2 trailer 100+ times.

The 3D when the avatar swims towards the reef…all those fish at different sizes, different distances, different depths, truly incredible 3D. I appreciate you.

  10. Hello Jonathan or anyone else on here doing the YUV444 encodes, I have a pretty robust Dolby Atmos home theater setup that can play pretty much any title I throw at it via an awesome Plex server I have, Fast GBit network, etc. My Nvidia shield playback device in the theater has transitioned over the last year or so from a 2017 Nvidia Shield pro X1 CPU, to a 2019 Shield 2019 X1+ CPU (32bit box), to my latest 2019 Shield Pro X1+ CPU (64bit box) but NONE of these devices can playback these YUV444 trailer titles on this awesome site. The YUV420 titles play back fine. Plex for windows app on my high end gaming PC can, in fact, play the 444 trailers fine from the plex server. Forgive me if this is posted elsewhere on this site already. Is there anything I am missing on this YUV444 file type to get success? Thank you

      1. Hi, can you tell me what software/technique you are using for making this 4k upscale, your video is way sharper in all layers, foreground background etc. I think 4k UHD blu-ray will not be as sharp as your release as they are trying to mimic lens aperture of physical cinema lenses and bokeh to make CGI more cinematic looking not so super sharp. Thanks

  11. Thanks to the valuable links to the better quality trailers of this website, I can do a remaster from SDR to HDR and add the upmixed 5.1 audio from stereo in Spanish, so you can download this version here:

    https://we.tl/t-oHcZqLEu98

(it will be available until 11 of November, so get it quickly!)

  12. I have Trailer 2 DCP in Flat (IMAX) version, but with subtitles. I don’t know how to remove the subtitles from DCP? I want to sent it to you without subtitles.

        1. Thank you for this! I shall repack the trailer with English Audio. Saw you posted earlier but didn’t manage to download a copy.

  13. Hi, I’m new here. I just wanted to know if YUV number has anything to do with the bitrate and overall quality of the videos or it’s related to brightness or else. I’m watching in a SDR 22″ 1080p monitor.

  14. Avatar The Way of Water really deserves so much attention, Cameron has given 3D a second life again, I hope so since there are less and less 3D movies lately. I watched the movie on my VR and it was wonderful.

  15. Hello, would you have an HFR version of any of the trailers by any chance? I guess it would be a 3D + 48 FPS trailer, so in total 96 FPS.
