I just watched The Force Awakens, and I must say that it lived up to my expectations in every way. Truly a return to the classic style from the original trilogy. It introduced some great new characters in Rey and Finn – who have a wonderful chemistry. I really liked Finn, he was a little goofy, fun, unsure of himself, and ultimately quite brave. John Boyega was wonderful in the role, as was Daisy Ridley as Rey. BB-8 was a fun addition to the droid lineup in the saga and it was an absolute delight to see Han and Chewie back in the Millennium Falcon. The film had quite a few genuinely funny moments, I know I spent a great deal of the time grinning like an excited kid. The movie introduces some new questions, mainly the origin of the new enemy who takes the place of Emperor Palpatine, and where did Luke’s lightsaber come from – because as you know it was hacked off of Luke’s arm along with his hand by Vader in The Empire Strikes Back, to eventually fall from Cloud City…to Bespin I guess. 

Bottom line – this is the Star Wars film you have been waiting for since you heard that Episode I was coming. In all the ways that episodes I-III are missing that element that makes episodes IV-VI fantastic, episode VII has them all and then some. It is a simpler story of good vs. evil instead of taxation of trade routes and senate procedures. I am fairly certain that it will challenge Avatar for that number 1 spot. If it doesn’t break the record, it will come close.

I can’t wait to see it again!

Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, adapted from the J. K. Rowling book of the same name. Trailer 1 is available as .mkv with FLAC 5.1 and .mp4 with Ac3 5.1. These can be found at the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them page.

I have also updated Finding Dory and Alice Through the Looking Glass to include 3D SBS versions of their respective first trailers.

A quick note on the week ahead. As you are likely aware, Star Wars Episode VII – The Force Awakens is officially released on Friday, December 18th. I have my tickets for a 7 pm show on Thursday, December 17th. I thought it would be best to be one of the first to minimize the chance of hearing about any spoilers – because you know that any big surprises will probably be live posted to social media – sad but true. So I am going to go “off the grid” so to speak, and limit my chances of having the surprises in the film ruined. I will probably post something here shortly after I see it – but I will certainly not give anything away.

There are some trailers that I am hoping to have posted by Friday, although there is no guarantee that any will actually be available. I am expecting a teaser for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Independence Day: Resurgence this week. Those are both a perfect match for The Force Awakens, hence my expectation. And there is also a possibility that we may get our first look at Episode VIII as well. I feel less certain of that, but it is entirely possible. Needless to say, if any of those come out I will do my best to get them up before the end of the week.

I also want to let you know that I will be away from my workstation from the 19th until the 26th. So there will be no updates during that time.

Trailer 2 for The Hateful Eight, the eighth and final film from Quentin Tarantino has been added to the site. I really love how this looks in the ultra-wide panavision format, and at first I thought this was wasted on this film, since so much appears to be shot inside, with the feeling that outside panoramic shots benefiting the most. But watching the trailers, it does open up the interior shots and gives them a real sense of being there. I would love to see this projected in 70mm, but there are no screenings near me.

Trailer 4 of In the Heart of the Sea has been uploaded with 2 versions available. A lossless FLAC and the usual AC3 5.1.  The film is set to be released on December 11. You can get these at the In the Heart of the Sea page.

I should be able to get Trailer 2 for The Hateful Eight uploaded tomorrow, and new 3D content will be coming soon. I also have some IMAX trailers that some kind visitors (René and David) sent my way, but I have yet to really dig into them so those are still on the to-do list.
